The Big G and Semantic search: Commercial success vs QoS

As years passed, it grew and the world took notice: the PhD. project by Larry page and Sergey Bin that eventually became the fastest growing project ,so fast that the Goliath at play,Microsoft ,had to take notice even though its market capitalisation was much much more than Google's.

Not very long ago i read an article on Google effort on semantic search and the effort it is putting in.But in practice I dont find anything...really.In fact I am feeling that the percentage relavance of the search terms to the the search results is sometimes alarmingly low.

Example:
Do a search for Microsoft and lo! the third result is about Internet Explorer 5.5 and the change in its URL.

And something more annoying (for me atleast).A search for India would give the first result as http://indiaimage.nic.in with the Wikipedia entry coming in second and the link we all hope should come first- the National Portal of India-http://india.gov.in coming in a very distant 7th.

And Google needs to get rich ,may be, but that does not mean Google ads give extraordinarily STUPID results. The search for 'the most searched word on The Net' (I could easily mention it if not for the fear of Mighty G listing my page in 'blog search' results for The Word) would get you a Google Ad for Children's furniture. That was a month ago...now that its a month let me check it out for you and ......Ahem! The results:
1.Girls Speak Out( Nothing explicit about this)
2.Hypersexuality -supposedly a research.
3.Something banned on EBay (Google does a good job here.Call the police please.Help the country ;-) ,and yourself)
4.Racing , Action and Cricket gaming titles.
5.Web Photo Album software.

Well,if Google calls this 'effort' and 'semantic search' ,then I guess it would get a little unhappy for those celebrating GOOG hitting $400 on NASDAQ.

As Google gets bigger and expectations grow for compulsive Googlers like me(One line explanations later, even for that QoS),it needs to work harder and smarter.

GoogleBot better watch out as Excavator is workin real hard to get close and might succeed.

Note:This article is essentially over except for the tech-uninitiated.Bah!I meant if you have understood each and everyword, please continue by clicking here.

The Explanations :
QoS- Quality of Service.
compulsive Googler-A person who has to use Google even for Google-bashing.
GoogleBot-Google's search engine(prefer calling it Google's spidey)
Excavator-Microsoft's spidey ;-)

As I have already said, all study made using Google. So commenters might help me providing an alternative.

No time for blogging exams on my neck(?)

Hi readers(the few people who read this are close enough to b eaddressed very informally), there have been no posts for a long time and this is getting me into frust (KGP lingo for 'frustration').

What can I do, absolutely helpless.Four class tests and three vivas in 9 days dont help. Infact the heavy schedule has caused my ill health.I have recovered now only to face the end-sems beginning 20th Nov.

So it is a no-brainer that a post beginning like this would only imply no further posts till I finish my end-sems.

Some news about a website which I'm enrolled:
Indianwebmaster.org a forum site had a 'hack-attempt' the site is up for a database update .Here is the mail I received.
"
As you may be knowing that We'd a hack attempt on our forum, and coz of that we lost most of the data....

So I need to do a database backup...and I hope i'll get most of the things back...but all the new users who registered after that date will need to register again.

Regards.
~root://
"

So, I'll have to see if I need to register again.

And for guys/gals having blogs, go check out Autopinger.com. It says it has tied up with ZingFast.com to their services so that your blog will get more exposure. Well, as far I'm concerned, "Unlucky - no time to blog" ;-(

Ganguly hitz a ton-I'm loving it

06/11/06-Today

I finished my electrical viva-not exactly screwed up nor a hit but satisfactory.

The only news cheering me up today is that my hero- Sourav Ganguly hit a century and showed that it's still not over.

He hit an unbeaten 118 against North Zone in the Duleep Trophy match today. Along with Abhishek Jhunjhunwala and Deep Dasgupta , he shared valuable partnerships to frustrate the North's bowlers who earned only to wickets for all their efforts today.

The match apart ,it is a hope for me that he'll return for the World Cup.With the more-than-disappointing performance in the Champions Trophy , it is definitely a chance.Atleast , I think so.So hope for the best and leave the rest.

Hmm, good point made.

The Ga(y)le that swept the South Africans away

The Last Crusade

He returned, yes he did
The consecrate knight
of burnish armour
His mighty steed
galloped, with him
on a thousand thoughts
of his maiden so fair

Left behind were blood and gore
wounded pride, crusades,
promised lands of death and wrath
the shining sword ...had served

It kept him alive, the purple flower
that spoke
of thimbleberries, by the brook that was
of the puerile love, that had been
of innocence, trust and unabashed faith
of her it spoke with tears of joy.

Return he did from the righteous crusades
The sands of time had turned vicious
tears of blood, of betrayal, of her
had washed it all
the dream was gone
love vanquished, hopes swallowed
by the agony of destine dismay

The cold that was
in her eyes, distant,
spoke of love gone awry
rage or despair?
unknown the feeling was

And he rode into nothingness
his mighty steed
galloped quick
He tried to his end, but in vain
to elude the shadow that was.

The Kentsfield arrives- Ready to ravage the High-end

2 November,2006 will remain a day to remember in history as Intel takes us into the multi core era with the release of the much anticipated quad-core processor:The Kentsfield.

Codenamed Kentsfield, this will be known as the Core 2 Quadro and wiil be numbered QCxxxx.

For all those who were thinkin if this would really boost performance...perish the thought. This beast flays competition. The performance boost is awesome.Work time is cutdown to half.An encoding from MPEG2 to WMV9 that would take 5:08 mins on a Core 2 Duo E6700 now takes only 2:55 mins. Now thats performance.

The other end: applications not written to take advantage of the new multi core architecture will NOT show any performance boost- however this is not the case with most demanding applications like renderers and encoders or even games.

So, all in all , Intel's on a rampage ,literally , with its back to back releases ,it is trying to push AMD onto the wall.

All will be decided two weeks down the lane when AMD is all set to release its quadcore version.

Till then , Intel can hold on to its much-fought-and-won "King of the processors" crown.

IBM Launches Software Development Centers In China And India

Source:
By Paul McDougall
InformationWeek.

The build-out of IBM's global operations continued Tuesday as the company announced the opening of new software development centers in Pune, India, and Beijing, China.

The centers will each be staffed by 500 developers focused on creating so-called service-oriented architectures for customers around the world, including those located in the United States. SOAs feature standards-based software components that allow customers to easily connect and re-use various business applications and services. IBM says it expects the market for SOA-based services to reach $160 billion by 2008. The company did not disclose the level of financial investment it's making in the Pune and Beijing facilities.

The Pune center will focus on building SOA systems for the insurance and healthcare industries. The Beijing facility will create systems for the banking and state and local government markets. Software architectures that will power the child welfare systems for four U.S. states will be created from Beijing, says Jeby Cherian, head of IBM's global solutions delivery for India. Cherian declined to identify the states.

The announcement marks the latest step in IBM's plan to centralize business software development activities in low-cost regions that are stocked with an abundance of IT talent. Earlier this year, the company opened a major new facility in the Indian tech hub of Bangalore, from which IBM employees are designing business technology architectures and related software for customers worldwide.

Cherian says the Pune and Beijing facilities will act as satellites of the Bangalore center. "They will be fully integrated," Cherian says. He adds that the Beijing center also will allow IBM to more easily serve its large customer base in Japan.

IBM's operations in China are small compared to its vast and rapidly growing Indian presence. It currently maintains a services staff of 7,000 in the People's Republic. By contrast, the company employs more than 40,000 workers on the sub-continent. But IBM has big plans for China that could result in a dramatic increase in the size of its Chinese workforce. "Our strategy is about both India and China and we'll continue to make strategic investments in both countries" Cherian says. "The scale of the operations in each will be determined by customer demand."

On Monday, IBM said it would partner with U.S. investment bank Lehman Brothers to launch a $180 million fund that will invest in midstage and mature Chinese businesses.

Further updates and author's comments will follow soon ;-)
